In September 2023, we announced that the European Union (EU) published Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 on batteries and waste batteries. Not only will it replace Battery Directive 2006/66/EC, but also introduce requirements in many new areas of sustainability and safety of batteries and battery-operated products. This law will be implemented in phases, starting on February 18, 2024.
One of the important provisions is that it emphasizes batteries’ compliance with Annex XVII of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH), where more restrictions of chemical substances other than mercury, cadmium, and lead are set out.
