On October 12, 2023, the French government, based on the Public Health Code, published a regulatory list of EDCs. It requires that all consumer products and their primary packaging materials must report substances containing more than 0.1% (w/w) EDCs via LIFE AskREACH. Starting from April 12, 2024, companies that fail to comply with the reporting requirements may face significant fines for each violation.
EDCs have received increasing attention in recent years. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs), also known as environmental hormones, are substances that, once absorbed by the human body, can mimic endocrine hormones such as thyroid hormones and estrogen. This may cause abnormal interference with physiological systems, potentially leading to metabolic disorders, reproductive dysfunction, cancer, and other endocrine-related diseases, as well as affecting normal growth and development in children.
EDCs are widely present in various applications, such as pesticides, flame retardants, and surfactants. In plastic manufacturing, additives such as plasticizers, colorants, antioxidants, and antibacterial agents are commonly used, making EDCs closely integrated into daily life. This is why regulatory authorities define consumer products as the control scope, covering a wide range of electronic, electrical, and other everyday products. For manufacturers, supply chain management of upstream raw materials is therefore essential.
The French EDCs list includes 128 chemical substances, such as UV absorbers, phenolic resin raw materials, and plasticizers. Some of these substances also appear on the EU REACH Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) Candidate List.
SGS can conduct EDC risk assessments for your products or raw materials based on the published regulatory list. An assessment report will be issued based on the results. If further reporting is required, the SGS team can also assist with data entry and uploading to LIFE AskREACH.
