In order to encourage consumers to extend the lifespan of their devices and to promote repair over purchasing new products when failures occur, thereby reducing excessive electronic waste generation; manufacturers must provide information related to the repairability index of devices so that consumers can understand the ease of repair of products and use this as a reference when purchasing. Consumers can thus make more environmentally friendly choices at the time of purchase.
The repairability index for electrical and electronic products is established based on the Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law No. 2020-105 of February 10, 2020. According to regulatory requirements, manufacturers, importers, distributors, or other marketers must provide repairability index information free of charge to sellers or consumers. Whether in physical stores or online sales, the repairability index must be disclosed to consumers at the time of purchase through labeling, display, or other appropriate means. Starting January 1, 2024, a durability index will complement or replace the repairability index for certain categories of equipment (covering reliability and repairability).
Each product model’s repairability index is evaluated based on the following five parameters, with a maximum score of 10. The higher the score, the more repairable the device is. Different colors are used to represent different score ranges.
The obligation to calculate and display the repairability index does not apply to free, loaned, second-hand, reused, refurbished, or rented equipment.
Within 2 years after the last unit of equipment is placed on the market, manufacturers or importers must provide a repairability index summary sheet electronically and free of charge within 15 days upon request.
