PFOS and PFOA: The Core of the PFAS Family
To understand PFOS and PFOA, it is essential to first introduce their parent group: Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). PFAS serves as an umbrella term for a vast class of thousands of synthetic organofluorides. Due to their exceptional stability, resistance to degradation, and ubiquitous presence, this chemical family is widely designated as toxic "forever chemicals" within global regulatory frameworks.
Throughout their product lifecycles—spanning manufacturing, consumer use, and end-of-life disposal—these compounds are inevitably released into atmospheric, terrestrial, and aquatic environments. Because PFAS do not readily degrade in soil and exhibit high water solubility, they migrate rapidly via groundwater systems.
Primary Human Exposure Pathways Include:
- Direct Contact: Utilizing consumer goods treated with PFAS-based surface coatings (the primary source of everyday exposure).
- Inhalation: Inhaling ambient air or indoor dust contaminated with PFAS particulates.
- Ingestion: Consuming drinking water or coming into contact with soil near industrial facilities that manufacture or utilize these compounds.
Although the PFAS family comprises thousands of distinct molecular structures, Perfluorooctanoic Sulfonic Acid (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA) remain the two most widely utilized, extensively researched, and stringently regulated substances globally.
