Over the past 20 years, environmental pollution has become increasingly severe, posing growing risks to human health and the environment. Hazardous substances commonly discussed in this context include heavy metals, flame retardants, plasticizers, persistent organic pollutants, and volatile organic compounds.
Green products are generally understood as products that are more environmentally friendly. The lower the content of hazardous chemical substances, the closer a product is to the concept of a green product.
According to the United Nations' "Global E-waste Monitor 2020", global e-waste generation increased by 21% in just five years and is projected to reach 74 million metric tons by 2030. This is mainly due to the short life cycles of electrical and electronic equipment, increasing consumption, and limited repair options.
Since 2003, the European Union has led the way with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive, commonly known as RoHS. Over the past two decades, many countries have introduced similar green product regulations and directives, while non-profit organizations have also promoted voluntary green marks and eco-labels. SGS refers to these product-related environmental regulations, directives, and voluntary requirements collectively as green product regulations.
